SC orders to complete the ML-I project within two years

ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday 12 February 2020, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has given a three-month deadline to complete the Karachi Circular Railway project and instructions for finish the ML-I project within two years.

During the hearing of the case related to downfall and debts on Pakistan Railways, the Supreme ordered the completion of these projects. Shaikh Rasheed, Railway Minister, and Asad Umar, Minister for Planning were summoned by the court today. 

Sheikh Rasheed after the hearing spoke to media saying that railways can not be reconditioned till the ML-I is not completed.

He further added that the ML-I project is the nerve center of all the railway tracks. As it is an obvious message for those who said that the CPEC is of no use and dumped. 

Railway Minister also said that the government has appealed to grant five years to complete the project but they have been given a two-year deadline. Adding that  “We will tell the Chinese that our court has given us the order. Hundred thousand people will work on the project out of which 95% will be Pakistanis.”

He said SC has also given to restore the KCR within three months, to make the system runnable as soon as possible.

Speaking in this regard he said “We are working with the Sindh government to have the remaining five kilometers cleared. The court has allowed us that we can take help from the Rangers in addition to the police for the clearance of the tracks,”

The Apex court has ordered the Sindh government and the ministry of railway to restore the KCR, last week. It was further said that all encroachment and illegal possessions within the land of railways must be demolished and a report should be submit regarding the plan in the next hearing.

Asad Umar also spoke to the media saying that the ML-I project will be talked about in the next JCC meeting about the CPEC, which is to be held in the month of April.

Adding that the approval of the project and its process is the responsibility of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council and the Central Development Working Party and it will be completed within no time.
