LAHORE: The appointment of Wasim Khan as the Managing Director was announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday.
According to statement said by PCB, after the comprehensive two-phase selection process in which 350 candidates were seen to express their interest for this position, the appointment was finalized.
In the first phase, a panel including HR Consultant, Mr Bakhtiar Khawaja, and independent member of the panel, Member Board of Governors (BOG), Lt Gen (R) Javed Zia, Member BOG, Mr Asad Ali Khan, President of Abacus Consulting and Chairman Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) conducted the interview of nine shortlisted candidates.
Later, the list was reduced to three candidates and PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani interviewed them and they were assisted by Javed Zia and Asad Ali Khan.
Wasim Khan said while commenting on his appointment that, “I am delighted to be offered the position of managing director of PCB – a role which I have accepted as a challenge.”
He further said that, “I have my roots in Pakistan, a country which is full of talent. I will be relocating to Pakistan with my family who are as excited as I am.”
The new Managing Director was welcomed by the chairman of PCB by saying that, “We welcome Wasim who will be joining the PCB soon. He was selected unanimously following robust interview process with some seriously good candidates. I must thank each and every applicant who participated in this process.”
It was said by Mani that, “Fresh ideas and knowledge of cricket was brought to him by Wasim and the support of the board and the management of PCB will be received by him.”
Moreover, he said that, “The process of revamping the PCB has been started by us and under Wasim, we now have an experienced leader of the management team who will supervise the implementation of the decisions of board. To manage the reforms of domestic cricket structure would be his first task.”
Wasim Khan is a former professional cricketer with a lot of experience in cricket and cricket management, who did his MBA from Warwick Business School which is one of the top-10 business schools in the world.
A county cricket was played by Wasim in England from 1995 to 2001, and Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire were represented by him during that time. He also has experienced in playing cricket in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. He scored 2,835 runs with five centuries and 17 half-centuries, with a highest score of 181, in a 58-match first-class career.
In 2013, Wasim Khan, the newly-appointed MD PCB, was awarded Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and after two years, he was also appointed as Chief Executive of the Leicestershire County Cricket Club and he had enjoyed an extremely successful period.
In 2005, Lord Mervyn King- the former Governor of the Bank of England had recruited him to lead a $50 million community development project which operated in 11,000 state schools and engaged 2.5 million children across England and Wales.
The board of Sport England which supervise policy setting and strategy of 55 National Sports Governing Boards, Wasim is on that board. While Wasim has been on the ECB’s Anti-Corruption and Integrity Unit for the last seven years, Equality and Human Rights Commission Sports Group and the Prince’s Trust Cricket Group was also served by him. Recently a responsibility of chairing a working group that assessed and made recommendations on the domestic structure from 2020 was given to him by the ECB.
Brim Full of Passion, his autobiography, was voted as the Wisden Book of the Year 2006.
It is expected that Wasim Khan would start his time in PCB around early February 2019.
